Rethinking Chronic Pain Management Series : Session 1 Cured to Death

This is session one of a four part series. This first session will review the mechanism of action of opioid pain relievers; discuss the evoluntionary survival value of pain and pleasure and why homeostasis of hedonic tone is critical for function and survival, introduce the opponent process of neuroplastic theory and highlight the changes chronic opioid therapy makes at the molecular level of the central nervous stystem.

1. Review the mechanism of opioid pain relievers.
2. Discuss the evolutionary survival value of pain and pleasure and why homeostasis of hedonic tone is critical for function and survival.
3. Introduce the opponent process of neuroplastic theory.
4. Discuss the changes chronic opioid therapy makes at the molecular level of the central nervous system.

1. The learner will have an increased knowledge of the mechanism of action of opioid pain relievers,and the changes chronic opioid therapy makes at the molecular level of the central nervous system.
2. The learner will self-report an understanding of the evolutionary survival value of pain and pleasure, and why homeostasis of hedonic tone is critical for function of survival.
3. The learner will self-report an understanding of opponent process of neuroplastic theory as described by Solomon and Corbett (1974).
4. The learner will have an increased knowledge of the importance of antinociceptive pathways of the CNS and how chronic opioid therapy inhibits the development of this natural mechanism of biological resiliency.
5. The learner will self-report an increased knowledge in the philosophy on the perception of pain and pleasure.

The Mississippi State Medical Association is a member of the Southern States CME Collaborative (SSCC).  North Mississippi Medical Center is accredited by the SSCC to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
