Medical Ethics

1. Describe the ethical and professional responsibilities of physicians to ensure patients and families with limited English proficiency understand and actively participate in their medical care through appropriate use of qualified medical interpreters.
2. Analyze clinical cases in which language barriers contributed to patient harm and identify how improper interpreter use—such as reliance on family members, untrained staff, or unauthorized devices—led to ethical and legal risk.
3. Evaluate the legal, ethical, and institutional implications of interpreter use decisions and determine when to utilize approved interpreting services, including NMHS interpreting resources, based on patient needs and regulatory requirements.

1. Apply knowledge of professional responsibilities and legal requirements related to the use of medical interpreters when analyzing case reviews involving patient harm.

The Mississippi State Medical Association is a member of the Southern States CME Collaborative (SSCC).  North Mississippi Medical Center is accredited by the SSCC to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
