Overview
With continuous development of new clinical evidence and revisions of existing guidelines, diseases of the heart can be a challenge for health care providers in their daily quest of caring for the people of this region. This symposium is designed to bridge knowledge gaps and develop competence in controversial issues, new guidelines, management strategies and new medications. This activity will highlight the challenges of recognizing, diagnosing and treating patients presenting with heart problems by enhancing and improving knowledge with a special emphasis given to refining diagnostic and therapeutic skills.

ACCME Objectives
  1. Distinguish care of the patient with heart disease in the primary care setting during the periods of time prior to and after cardiac specialty care to include post procedural considerations.
  2. Correctly identify appropriate management of patients with cardiovascular conditions encountered in the primary care setting by analyzing and discussing multiple case studies.
  3. Recognize current guidelines and best practice for the management of patients with cardiac disease presenting to the primary care setting.
  4. Identify an intent to change practice by following current recommended guidelines in the screening, referral and management of cardiac patients.

ANCC Learning Outcomes
  1. Self-report a recognition of current guidelines and best practice for the management of patients with cardiac disease presenting to the primary care setting.
  2. Self-report an interpretation in the care of the patient with heart disease during the periods of time prior to and after cardiac specialty care to include post procedural considerations.

  4. Identify an intent to change practice by applying current guidelines in the management of cardiac patients in theire individual practice.
