Sickle Cell Complications in the Pediatric Population

This course provides an overview of the pathophysiology of sickle cell disease and its most common pediatric complications. Learners will explore how these complications develop and review evidence-based approaches for recognizing and managing vaso-occlusive crises, acute chest syndrome, and stroke in children.

1. Analyze the fundamental pathophysiology of sickle cell disease and its impact on pediatric patients.
2. Differentiate common pediatric complications of sickle cell disease, including vaso-occlusive crises, acute chest syndrome, and stroke.
3. Evaluate and apply evidence-based management strategies to effectively treat these complications in pediatric clinical practice.

1. Learners will prove increased knowledge in pathophysiology and treatment of common pediatric sickle cell disease complications by passing the posttest scoring 80% or higher.

The Mississippi State Medical Association is a member of the Southern States CME Collaborative (SSCC).  North Mississippi Medical Center is accredited by the SSCC to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
